FUTURE OF POLYMER SECTOR

R & D investments in plastic and rubber industries are of great importance. Particularly, nanotechnology and electronics (circuit design and construction) techniques can lead to breakthrough in new product innovations. For example, the use of plastic derivatives in nano chips instead of silicon, and the coating of smartphone screens with plastic derivatives are among the innovations already implemented.

Thermoplastics developed with nanotechnology are used in many fields from hard disks to automotive parts. Again, nano-composite plastic foams are used in a wide range from insulation materials to coffee and tea cups, diapers to packaging materials. The durability and reliability of plastic derivatives can make them be seen in more unexpected areas. One example is the use of plastic alloys in the main body of the Dreamliner, the latest product from Boeing airplane factory. The smarter plastic packages will be helpful for the storage of foods (even though refrigerators and electricity are missing), especially in underdeveloped and developing countries. In the near future, where the alternative cost of water will increase, plastic networks will be able to provide water distribution and use flow between countries and regions, just as for electricity and natural gas.

Another technological development that could explode the mass consumption of plastic products will be the expansion of 3D printers and more tolerable prices that households can buy. Plastics will also be indispensable for robots. Robots are expected to be largely involved in the production processes in both industry and service sectors, as well as by households within a few decades.

Turkish plastics industry within R&D and innovation is constantly running to make the future dreams come true. Yalova University Polymer Materials Engineering graduates have been employed in domestic and foreign companies since 2014, and our department continues its activities at national and international level for our country.
